Experience
I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of San Diego in English and creative writing. As a student as USD I had the opportunity to tutor other students in their writing center. I worked with a diverse student population to help them improve their essay writing skills and study for literature exams. I also spent a great deal of time teaching ESL students and was inspired to go on to obtain my certification for teaching English as a foreign language. I continue to work with ESL/ELL students and I also tutor all students in reading, writing, essay editing, literature, English grammar and syntax, essay writing, English, reading, and comparative literature. I have also worked with students to prepare for the SAT. One of my favorite teaching strategies for working with a student who is attempting to improve their critical reading or writing skills is to read aloud. I believe that it is far easier to improve one's understanding of literature and writing ability by hearing the words which have been written. This can give more information about the tone of the author and the feeling that was intended to be conveyed. For students who are struggling with critical reading, this can be revolutionary.
