Education

Iowa State University Ames, IA B.S. Nutritional Science 3.43 GPA 2019 Hi! I’m Cassidy. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutritional Science from Iowa State University in May 2019. I'm currently living in Jacksonville and taking a gap year before pursuing graduate school.

Experience

I tutored Organic Chemistry 1&2 through the university’s academic success center (ASC) for two semesters while I was a student; it's my favorite subject! I tutored 3 groups of 1-5 students for one hour sessions, twice per week. In order to be a tutor through the ASC I underwent training on how to be an effective tutor. The training especially emphasized using multiple “active learning strategies” (i.e. using clarification pauses, having students quiz each other, or engaging in group discussions) to cater to students’ different learning styles and improve comprehension. I was evaluated twice each semester by the ASC during a tutoring session to ensure that I was using the active learning strategies, using good communication skills, had a knowledge of the material, and was overall an effective tutor. I always received excellent evaluations and the ASC was even impressed with some of the strategies I had come up with to help students understand certain concepts. With such a challenging subject like O.Chem., it was necessary for me to reframe difficult concepts into an easy-to-understand way in order to promote comprehension. In fact, I would often have to reframe multiple times depending on different students' learning styles. My ability to do this demonstrates my effectiveness as a tutor. I really enjoyed tutoring and found it very rewarding to see students "get it" and not only improve their grades, but enjoy learning! At the end of each semester the students had a chance to anonymously evaluate me, and I received great reviews both semesters. While my experience is in O. Chem., I am happy to tutor other subjects, as well. Because I was pre-medicine as an undergraduate I also have knowledge of a wide variety of disciplines including but not limited to biology, microbiology, inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, and anatomy & physiology. I achieved a 505 on the MCAT which also shows that I have mastered these subjects and others.

Hobbies

I also have experience working with children. I have about 6 months of experience as a gymnastics coach for children ages 2-12, where I wrote weekly lesson plans for about 10 classes per week. While working as a coach I would routinely find myself improvising and adjusting lesson plans to meet each child's unique needs, which is an important tutoring skill, as well. What I loved the most about working with kids, though, is that I got to make learning fun! This experience, combined with my experience tutoring and my academic knowledge allows me to be an effective tutor for both children and young adults.
